I think that the kid should not spend the rest of his life in jail. He is just fourteen. Instead of jail punishment, why not a facility for young delinquents or even a boot camp for 10 years where he is shaped into a better person. Maybe someone yelling in his face twenty four seven or being pushed around might change his state of mind. The other boy might need a harsher punishment because he created worse damage to the grandmother. Maybe if someone found out the real reason for the two boys to kill the old lady, then will the situation be resolved.

Someone yelling at him is not going to change him. He went to eat pizza after he killed his grandmother. What kind of person does that? A person that does not care of who he killed. The real reason the boys killed her was that they are criminals... There is not other reason.

Antonio Barbeau should be tried as a adult and spend the rest of his life in prison. He did something he was completely aware of. Someone does not just go and kill their grandmother just because they went to rob her house. He ate pizza after he killed her. What kind of person does that? I would not want this person to be free because he is probably going to do something similar. He knew exactly what he was doing and deserves to stay their for life.

I strongly disagree with you Janigha because this child killed an innocent woman who care for him as a child. You saying they should send him to boot camp, what will boot camp do to him.? If the lady he killed was your grandmother, you would say he deserve the time he got. You should think about other people, this child killed his grandmother. If he can killed his grandmother, he can kill anyone.

I disagree with you this young man knew what he was doing and yelling at this young man will not stop him but will stop him is death. He killed his grandmother if it had not been for her he wouldn't be here.He killed her not by accident but brutally murder her and then went to go eat pizza something is wrong with this young man an in order for him to stop he will need to serve life in prison.

I do think Antonio Barbeau deserves some sort punishment for what he did, but trying him as an adult and putting him in a cage until he's fifty seems a bit hyperbolic. It's incredibly obvious that he and his friend have some sort of mental ailment if they go get Pizza after murdering an eldery woman that just happens to be his Grandmother.

I do not agree with your statement. I do think he should be tried as a adult. He did something that he was aware of. He probably did have a mental issue but he still deserves to be tried as a adult. He did something that i did not think anyone would do.

Yes, I agree, he was insane. But, no one on this planet should be able to kill their great grandmother. Plus, why didn't he get help in 2009? If they saw him as being that ridiculously crazy, they would've been helped him. His mental issues are used as a crutch in this case.

The article Tried as an adult shows how white are treated differently from minority in this country. I think someone as this boy in this article serving a life sentence is fair because you should be punished for the crime you choose to commit. I feel like the decision was justified because nobody should walked away for killing anyone. He should not be treated as a juvenile because he knew from the start that he was going to killed his grandmother. When his friends came over and told him, they was going to killed his grandmother, he said nothing. He deserve the time he got. I do not want this person to be free after 36 years because he knew what he was doing was wrong but yet he went on with it anyway. People has the nerve to say he has mental issues. This boy do not have mental problem, he planned this. If this was a black child or any minority child who did this, they will not say that child has mental issues. They will sentence them to life with no parole. White people in this country get away with a lot of criminal activities/murder. This boy robbed his grandmother and killed her. After killing her, he went on with his life, He ate, clean up the mess and tried to hid her body. I don't care what anyone has to say, he do not deserve parole or release. He needs to stay in that Jail house until he dies.

I agree, the media always make White kids who do things like this look like angels. Meanwhile, a teenager who experiments with drugs gets portrayed as a godless thug ready to destroy society. One could argue that the same thing happens with conventionally attractive women. It happened with Casey Anthony and a few others not too long ago.

I agree with this comment about how whites are treated differently . If a black person would have done this to his or her grandmother or anyone, they are going to jail with no questions asked. There is a second thought of prosecuting him because he's known to be " mentally distraught." There was a similar scenario with a kid who was mentally messed up but he got locked up for what he did. It just doesn't add up to me, he should be locked up for the rest of his life.

The article " Tried as an adult " talks about a 14 year old boy killed his 78 year old great grandmother. Looking in a Sociological criticism , this boy is only given a stereotype of being mental because he is a white male. Looking at the text, the article shows bias on whether or not the boy deserves to get 50 years. Ironically they use this excuse for every white male who perfoms a murdering/terroist act. It leaves me wondering whether or not things would be different if the boy was a minority. It is clear that once a black person is accused of murder people are already down their throats with accusations . If its a muslim or brown person , they are assumed to be terrorists . The fact of the matter society plays role in making white men not able to be responsible for their crimes. Moslty because it is a little boy.

I agree wholeheartedly, I believe the question posed was more about the reversal of gender roles. I feel like if it were a man this would have not made the news like it did. In fact, I think people just view Grandmothers are peaceful, loving and caring people. I do agree with the race thing as well, If he were any other color the comment section would be littered with casual bigotry and generalizations of people.

i agree with this statement because the law system always make something up about the white man having an illness so he can get away with murder. That is not how the system works. Everyone deserves equal punishment and race cannot get in the way.

I believe that though this child, though he is 14, should be tried as an adult. He knew what he was doing. He planned it out with his friend. He wanted to kill his Great-Grandmother. His family believes that he should be let go, but i disagree. To me he seems insane. No sane person would kill their Great-Grandmother. No sane person would take an hatchet to a family member. No matter his race, sex, religion, or whatever can be taken into account, I refuse to believe there isn't something wrong with this guy.

In my opinion, the crime committed itself was gruesome. It does not matter how young this boy is, therefore, he deserves every single year in prison that he gets. Barbeau and Paape are responsible. If the system were to treat him as a juvenile, then the punishment wouldn't be harsh enough. You know what that means, right? He wont learn from his mistake. There's no consequences. I feel as though his sentence was justified. The funny part is, it might not be justified enough. If they were to release Barbeau after 36 years, then he wouldn't have been properly punished. The crime that he committed was the most inhumane, disgusting, and selfish thing, EVER! I wouldn't want him to be free after 36 years unless he would be provided counseling along with intense micromanagement. In my eyes, he cannot be trusted. I feel as though he would try to get back at society for putting him in prison, because I know for a fact that he didn't want to go. Barbeau will only intend on the hurting of others after his departure, especially if he can kill his great grandmother. This proves that you never know what some peoples' true intentions are..

I agree with Taviah because This boy killed someone who took care of him as a child. He has the nerve to killed her, he deserve to live in that prison house until he dies. If he can killed his own grandmother, he can truly kill someone else. The system of America needs to think about this before they decide to set him free. This little man do not need to be set free at all. If this murder was committed by a minority child, that child will be in prison without parole.

I agree with this because murder is a crime that no man, woman, boy, or girl should commit. If he has the time to commit a crime like this then he has the time to serve the consequences for it. Yes

I think Antonio Barbeau deserves to be sentenced to life in jail. What he did is not normal, he may have a mental illness that caused him to do what he did but unless it is proven he should be in jail. Normally when someone kills another person they intended to do it, killing someone the way he did is not accidental. Fourteen is a good age for someone to know what is right and wrong. He may not change the way he is after he goes to jail and if he were released he could do the same thing again. We do not know what people are thinking so we can not trust them to be free in society.

The article "Tried as an adult" is about a 14 year-old boy who killed his 78 year-old great grand mother. He was sentenced to spend at least 36 years in prison and I think it's totally fair. He knew what he was doing was wrong and he kept doing it anyway. According to the article he had a brain injury from a 2009 car accident but I don't think that brain injury is the reason why he was unable to stop with the killing of his great grandmother. If the 36 years in prison don't change him as a person nothing will. Matter of fact he should spend the rest of his life in jail. He doesn't deserve to be released. He is only 14 but he is old enough to know what's wrong and what's right. Therefore he should pay for it just like an adult. You make your bed you lay on it, end of story.

The article "Tried as an adult" is about a 14 years old who killed his 78 years old great grandmother, and he has been sentenced to spend at least 36 years in jail for the murder, making hum eligible for parole when he is 50 years old. I think it's fair with what he did, but with 36 years in jail could make him change? or he still does what he did in the past because I know some people after the end of their prison sentence remains unchanged.

Antonio Barbeau should spend the rest of his life in jail. He committed a brutal murder to a helpless family member that did him no harm, but not only that he planned it. Family says he was mentally distraught but no man in their right mind can do this and not notice what's being done. I feel as though he should be tried as an adult . Hopefully he realizes what he's done after his 36 years with parole.

Him having a car crush when he was younger is not an excuse to blame him of the killing of his own love one. From the looks of it he can be easily influenced by a friend. I think there's way more to the story the we just know. An only he would know why he really did it unless he’s truly insane where we do not want him back on the streets.

I agree with you there he knows what he has done and what comes after . you can not just kill someone and just walk free. Even though he get time he still will be able to walk the streets once more.He should spend life for killing the woman that brought his mother here to bring him here.

The article "Tried as adult" is about a young boy white boy who killed his grand mother. I will be taken a sociological criticisms stand point i believe that this article is a perfect example on how our justice system is corrupt. This young man has committed murder and will only have to stay in jail until he is 50 will parole. If this had have been a black male he would have gotten life in to days society an din history we have been wintry to change racism but with our courts doing things of nature i do not believe it will get in better. This man him and his friend deserve life they where both conscience of what they where doing and should have to suffer the consequence of there actions.

In the article "Tried as a Adult " , explains how a 14 year old boy murders his elderly great grandmother. In the article the author uses verbal irony when they say "Olson's body was found in a pool of blood ". I personally think had this been a 14 year old female she wouldn't have been sentenced that long in prison . In the article the author lets us see how the judicial system isn't fair towards males and females , and minority .
